Race Report 2001 - Round 6

Date: July 22, 2001
Venue: Kimbrough Stadium - Canyon, TX
Results: 3rd in Class, 13th Overall (15 total)

All I've got to say is... I SUCK!

I wasn't even planning on racing at Canyon's Kimbrough Stadium this year because the surface there is all loose gravel and it's like trying to race on ice (plus it tears up your tires). But... James Huckabee told me that he was going to use his factory wheels and some old street tires on his Street Modified 1991 Mustang GT to run there just for shits and giggles, and offered me a co-drive in his car (Thanks, James!).

This isn't an excuse for my poor performance, but I'm so used to the mind-numbing adhesion that I get in my car at Reese Center and Miller Field that I wasn't prepared at all for the slippery gravel at Kimbrough Stadium. I tried to "tippy-toe" around the course as best as I could, but I didn't even get close to James' times or Asa Neiman's, who won the Street Modified class in his 1993 Mustang GT. I also plowed over several cones on 5 of my 6 runs. My only clean run got me 3rd in class (out of 3 total), and 13th overall (out of 15 total). A pathetic performance in my opinion.

The good news is... I acquired enough points at this event that I was able to pass Steve Sucsy (who didn't race at this event) for the lead in the championship points standings!!! Although this event will be a "throw-away" at the end of the year (only the best 8 out of 10 events count for final points), it sure is cool to see my name at the top of the points list.
