Race Report 2001 - Round 4

Date: May 27, 2001
Venue: Civic Center - Amarillo, TX
Results: 1st in Class, 2nd Overall (19 total)

Another event at the Civic Center... another small/tight course (not good for a front heavy V8 Mustang). I got there early to help Bill Threlfall set up the course, and although I didn't design it, I suggested some changes to help maximize speed on the small venue. The turnout wasn't too big, but that was to be expected since it was Memorial Weekend and most people would be away on vacation. We did, however, get some good exposure because of a gun show being held at the Civic Center... lots of spectators for the 19 of us.

I was able to control the car well enough to keep the understeer at a minimum (a lot of people were complaining about their cars pushing badly on the Civic Center's slick surface), and felt that I was running pretty quick. James Huckabee got real close to my best time in his Street Modified '91 Mustang GT, but I still had him by 0.548 seconds. Steve Sucsy was able to run .292 seconds faster (raw time) than me in his nimble A-Stock '00 Honda S2000 (on his FIRST run!), but considering his car is potentially much better on a small/tight course, I was actually content with losing to him by only that much for the overall win (especially on a 35-40 second course).

Fastest Time of the Day would've been out of the question for me at this event even if I had won overall, because Leo McKeown showed up with his F-125 Shifter Kart. He and Jay Messenger (co-driving) put in some really quick times, and it made us all jealous because it looked so friggin' fun!
