Race Report 2001 - Round 2

Date: March 25, 2001
Venue: Civic Center - Amarillo, TX
Results: 2nd in Class, 4th Overall (28 total)

This was my first event with the new wheels. I was concerned that they might handle differently than my old wheel/tire combination, but thought that the new look would be worth the trade-off.

The course was small and tight due to the size limitations of the new venue, but it looked like it would be a fun challenge. Steve Sucsy showed up without his '00 Honda S2000 due to a problem with his trailer, so I offered him a co-drive in my car. I had planned on running 9 runs but thought I might end up only running 6 runs since Steve would be running an additional 6 runs and I wanted to save my tread. After running 6 runs, I decided that I would go ahead and run the extra 3 because I was confident that I could run it faster. The car was both understeering and oversteering on the tight course, but I knew I could wring a really fast run out of it. As I suspected, I was able to improve my times by over a full second compared to my first 6 runs, but... I had hit a cone on all three of my final runs. My best run, had it been clean, would've acquired me a win in class, an overall win, and fastest time of the day! But... a dirty run is a dirty run.

Steve ended up running 0.366 seconds faster than my best clean run, so that left me in 2nd place in class, and 4th place overall (out of 28). Oh well... you win some, you lose some.
